They are working on rebuilding the art program, and just got a new principal this last year. Still flushing out incompetent admin and staff.

My experience at Point Loma high school was valuable however I’m left feeling my high school experience was incomplete. Due to the Covid pandemic and lockdowns, I spent the last months in 8th grade and the majority of my freshman year off campus. It was challenging to adjust to online learning as the online programs often malfunctioned and were hard to sign in to. When I returned, initially I had some difficulty keeping up with the work load but my high school experience improved throughout the years. More clubs appeared, and I developed more responsible study habits. My biggest regret is not having more clubs available sooner. I also wish the school had a more organized website and more effectively communicated information. The school however was full of interesting classes with passionate teachers and students.

Point Loma High really strives for student's success, the culture of the student's is the worst of the school, bathrooms will be locked during lunch to prevent vaping and every week there's a fight or discourse of a sort in the quad. I'd like to see the student culture change.

Great teachers, especially in STEM fields including engineering, math, and the sciences. Food and bathrooms are highly underfunded, and lack of competitive teams/clubs (other than sports).

Good people, good academics, about half the buildings are really nice and the other half are ok. Not an open campus which sucks tho.

My overall experience at Point Loma High was cut short because of the beginning of the pandemic, but I thought it was a good school before hand. I enjoyed the student life and everyone was kind to each other. I joined the cheer team and didn’t have a problem with any students but I think the worst part about Point Loma High was that some of the faculty working there were not the best. There was a teacher who I had and she received many complaints from parents as she was not the best at teacher students and she was never fired and continued to mess up our educations. They always let go of the best teachers that I learned something from and I am an extremely slow learner so it was a bit heartbreaking to see that other students won’t have the chance to take the really amazing teachers who know the best methods of teaching.

Point Loma High school has an amazing music program that I was apart of for all four years of high school. It gave me an environment that I was so proud to be apart of and I was able to relate to other students and have a community inside the music program but outside of that I struggled a lot to connect with other people. Especially because there is a lack of diversity at Point Loma High school. Often times I couldn't find people that I could relate to in an ethnic and cultural sense. I found it hard to find a community I could relate to about my own personal culture which I hold very dear to myself. Because of that I struggled a lot with accepting and learning about my own culture because I didn't want to be an outcast. That is one thing I would really like to see change within Point Loma High school.

My student attended all four years at PL and although there were some positive experiences there, the negative ones outweighed the good. If you're looking for academics that prepare your student for college this is not the school. It is my opinion that many of the teachers, and most of the staff, are just there to collect a paycheck. They are not truly invested in your student's education. When you come to them with concerns they are dismissive and not interested in problem solving. Many of the teachers in my opinion are inappropriate and support a classroom culture that is shocking, as my student would share with me regularly about their day. Sometimes recordings would come home and I was blown away by what I heard. It seems that some of these teachers think that raunchy and chauvinistic in-class humor makes them relatable. AP Spanish is an absolute joke. The senior ceramics teacher grades harshly and takes the joy out of an arts course. Football/Soccer are favored over any sport.

My high school was an amazing place that left a lasting impression on me. The faculty and staff were incredibly supportive and dedicated to helping students achieve their goals. The curriculum was challenging yet engaging, and I always felt motivated to learn more. I also had the opportunity to participate in a range of extracurricular activities, from sports to music to community service, which helped me develop my skills and interests beyond the classroom. Overall, I look back on my high school experience with fondness and appreciation for all that it offered me.

I love this school but one major issue is the “culture” of the school. Lots of students here don’t act responsibly and don’t make the place safe for students that aren’t in the center of everything.

My experience as fairly unique as I am one of the few African American females that attend my school. We have a fairly good curriculum and decent teachers to explain it to us. However, I think the most difficult part for me is the lack of people like me. I am African American and middle class. I go to school with mostly White, affluent kids. There is a bit of a rift.

We have been very happy with PLHS as a school for our students. There is a good variety of classes including AP and college credit courses. They even have Portuguese! The music program in the cluster is wonderful and continues into the high school. The staff are caring and our kids have made great friends there.

When in AP classes, you get put on a pathway that leads to more opportunities, not so much regular classes. Most teachers are good and it's a good school for your four years

They obviously didn't have enough resources for the amount of students. Most of the students were well off enough to afford tutors or college coaches so most of the statistics you see are because of that and not because of the resources.

Overall, she had a good experience. Nothing the school can do about a pandemic. The counselors there are a little hard to get a hold of. Teachers were pretty responsive and overall very accommodating.

Point Loma High School is incredibly average. There are a decent amount of smart, driven students who take advantage of the advanced courses provided here and push for good grades. But the majority of the school falls below those standards. Administration tends to make odd decisions about how to deal with certain situations. Violent and disruptive students are rarely punished to any degree leaving teachers and other faculty to have to take time out of their day to handle them. I do hope we as a school can do better and push for smarter leadership.

My high school experience seemed pretty average. Some teachers impacted my overall experience at Point Loma. They tried to teach and influence students to have the future they wanted. However, there wasn't much student diversity or activities that I have seen on campus. There weren't many resources to help students with the college process until later senior year and not any specific scholarship opportunities.

Point Loma high school is a medium sized school located in a beautiful area of Point Loma. The facilities are on the newer side and the lunches are decently good.

My experience at Point Loma High was decent, to say the least as the teachers and curriculum were well-taught and detailed. Though the effort the school makes towards college and scholarship opportunities is slight. Students must take it upon themselves to strive for a better opportunity in life and I wish that the counselors and district would do more to push students to their full potential.
